Students turn back clock for 80s-inspired musical

Students at Hellesdon High School are stepping back into the neon-lit world of the 1980s as they prepare to bring ‘The Wedding Singer’ to the stage later this month.

The musical, based on the 1998 film starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, tells the story of Robbie Hart, a wedding singer who unexpectedly falls for waitress Julia after agreeing to perform at her wedding. Although both characters are initially set on different life paths, fate — and a lot of big hair and bigger tunes — has other ideas.

More than 60 students from Years 7 to 13 are involved in the production, making it one of the school’s largest shows in recent years. Rehearsals have been underway since September, with behind-the-scenes planning beginning as early as last June.

“The life skills and experience they gain is invaluable”

Head of Music Lara Leuw-Gardner said the commitment shown by students has been impressive. “Some students have been giving up six hours a week plus rehearsing for the show at home,” she said. “But the life skills and experience they gain is invaluable and will be remembered forever. I still remember my school shows!”

She described the musical as a “fun” choice for the school, adding that it had been some time since Hellesdon High staged a show with an 80s theme.

“Regarding casting, we had well-suited students to roles this year,” she added.

Packed with classic 80s tracks from artists such as Kajagoogoo, Spandau Ballet and Dead or Alive, The Wedding Singerpromises plenty of nostalgia alongside energetic performances from the cast.

The show will run on January 28, 29 and 30, with tickets now on sale. Booking details are available via the school’s website at www.wensumtrust.org.uk/hellesdonhigh.
