Big day of sport for local school

Dodgeball, frisbee, and golf were just some of the many activities on offer when children from a Norwich school tested their sporting mettle at a special one-day event.
Twelve Year 1 and 2 pupils from Heather Avenue Infant School took part in the West Norwich and Dereham Sports Partnership Multi Sports Festival, which was held at Easton Tennis Centre.
Attended by 180 children from 15 infant and primary schools in the area, the event gave participants the chance to try their hands – and feet – at a host of different sports, including tennis, rugby, dodgeball, ultimate frisbee, tri-golf, basketball, football, and gymnastics.
“These events provide valuable opportunities to play sport”

It was the first time that Heather Avenue, which is a member of the Wensum Trust, had been involved in the Festival.
“Events like this allow the children to experience new sports and new venues, and to develop their skills of working as a team, develop their physical skills, and to compete against other local schools and between themselves,” said Wendy Howes, who is Year 2 Teacher and PE Coordinator at the school, and accompanied the group on the day.
“These events provide valuable opportunities to play sport outside of skills,” she added. “They provide pathways to new venues and sports, provide a taste of a new sport or venue, develop children’s confidence, team work, and social skills, and allow children to succeed in other curriculum areas than just academic subjects.”
