Campaign launched to protect Hellesdon’s green spaces

A newly formed community action group in Hellesdon is urging residents to support efforts to save two much-loved meadows under threat from development.
Save Our Spaces (SOS) was set up in response to plans by Norfolk & Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust to sell land and buildings on Drayton High Road. Developers are proposing to build at least 300 homes on the site, which campaigners warn would mean the loss of two large meadows and mature trees.
The group says the meadows are more than just open land – they are carefully managed wildflower habitats, vital for local biodiversity, providing a home for birds, insects, and small wildlife. They are also a popular, free, and accessible place for exercise, recreation, and relaxation.
“Time in nature reduces stress and improves well-being. Green spaces aren’t a luxury – they’re essential,” said a spokesperson for SOS.
The group is calling on residents to share their memories of community activities held on the meadows, from football and cricket to family gatherings, to strengthen their campaign.
